Our Story:

The Wausau Sentinel is a news site in the Wausau area founded by Evan J. Pretzer. It prints a small batch of physical copies once a month. Evan is an immigrant from Canada and opted to take this step in his career after previous full-time and freelance experiences and because he is concerned with how local news in U.S. communities has been decimated. Some other people may occasionally contribute something with or without a name, but, he is the editor, founder, principal reporter, and photographer to reach out to if you have a tip.

Why should I subscribe?

To paraphrase Steven Tyler, you don’t want to miss things. Those who subscribe freely will get access to most content published and will be able to participate in contests alongside paid supporters. Every subscriber will also receive end-of-month roundups via email and paid supporters can access some stories exclusively while founding members get access to key stories before others. This may change as time goes on and things evolve. Support will allow Evan and his peers to do more work, and, this is needed now more than ever. Lies flourish easily online and many newsrooms are gutted by clueless executives.

What day do you publish and when is your deadline?

News stories are generally published as they are completed with the usual end-of-day deadline being 5 p.m. If you want a story in our physical copy, it needs to be in by Tuesday at 4 p.m. during the week of the 15th of each month for now.

What do you do with data?

To be blunt, absolutely nothing. While big companies may sell what you give them to third parties who then inundate you with nonsense or have nefarious purposes in mind, this is not the goal of The Wausau Sentinel. We want to be self-sustaining, cover what matters, and show people moments from Wausau and the surrounding area they may not see elsewhere with more depth. The privacy policy as laid out by Substack is what we will be doing with info. Evan also believes in being transparent, so, feel free to ask him anything at any time.

Do you take any advertising?

Yes, we do. Ads are on a case-by-case basis. If you are interested in supporting us this way, please contact Evan himself to work out a deal or various deals. We have several digital and physical options available at highly reasonable rates.

Where can I find your print runs?

Print copies are available at the Lil’ Ole Winemaker Shoppe on Jefferson Street and The Ugly Mug, also. Copies are first-come-first-serve, free, and small in number at this time. This may change in the future as the outlet evolves.

I spotted something inaccurate, what do I do?

Let us know. Corrections will be published at the top of stories with text explaining how the original runs below and any error is deeply regretted. These happen in the business (reporters are human, really), but we try to avoid them.
